When I first sit down to make a quilt out of old clothes, I have a process I normally go through.
- Launder clothes if necessary.
- Sort garments into meaningful piles so I can see what Iām working with. I may sort by color, weight, or type of fabric depending on the project.
- Pick the core garments that will make up the color palette of the quilt.
- Deconstruct them by cutting out the seams and any interfacing
- Iron the pieces
- Fold into neat little stacks
- Cut up one panel of each of the main garments into workable sizes (normally hand-sized for me)
- Arrange on design wall and play around with composition until something catches my eye
- Replicate that something as many times as necessary to finish the quilt
